On Wednesday 7 May 2025, 126 Latinists (S2-S3) from the European schools in Karlsruhe, Strasbourg and Frankfurt took part in the FACES event at our school. This included 44 pupils from the German-speaking section, 35 French-speakers, 34 English-speakers and 10 Italians. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Latinists learned about ancient culture through workshops led by French speakers from the ACTA association (from Beaucaire, France): experimental archaeology, Latin theatre, gladiatorial school. In the theatre workshop, we were able to don the masks and costumes of characters from Latin comedy. We found the experimental archaeology workshop too theoretical, although at the end the teacher explained the importance of the 3 sources: artefacts, representations and texts, which must always be cross-referenced. For example, the Latin text by the writer Martial on the gouged out eyes of gladiators was disproved by the objects (the spear cannot penetrate the mesh of a helmet) and by the experience of the in vivo reconstruction carried out by the gladiators. The bloodlessness can only be caused by a brow bone irritated by rubbing against the helmet. At the gladiatorial school (in the gymnasium), we performed exercises following instructions in Latin. Many of us regretted not being able to duel! It has to be said that our wooden weapons could hurt. The day ended with a gladiatorial combat. Explanations were given in French and English.<\/p>\n

Am Mittwoch, den 7. Mai 2025, fand in unserer Schule das FACES statt, an dem 126 Lateinsch\u00fcler (S2-S3) der Europ\u00e4ischen Schulen in Karlsruhe, Stra\u00dfburg und Frankfurt teilnahmen, darunter 44 Sch\u00fcler aus dem deutschsprachigen Zweig, 35 franz\u00f6sischsprachige, 34 englischsprachige und 10 italienische Sch\u00fcler. Von 10 bis 15 Uhr lernten die Lateinsch\u00fcler in Workshops, die von franz\u00f6sischen Referenten des Vereins ACTA (aus Beaucaire, Frankreich) geleitet wurden, etwas \u00fcber die antike Kultur: experimentelle Arch\u00e4ologie, lateinisches Theater, Gladiatorenschule. Im Theaterworkshop konnten wir Masken und Kost\u00fcme von Figuren aus der lateinischen Kom\u00f6die anziehen. Der Workshop zur experimentellen Arch\u00e4ologie erschien uns zu theoretisch, auch wenn uns der Referent am Ende die Bedeutung der drei Quellen erkl\u00e4rte: Artefakte, Darstellungen und Texte, die immer miteinander verglichen werden m\u00fcssen. So wurde beispielsweise der lateinische Text des Schriftstellers Martial \u00fcber die ausgestochenen Augen der Gladiatoren durch die Objekte (die Lanze kann den Drahtgitterhelm nicht durchdringen) und durch die Live-Nachstellung durch Gladiatoren widerlegt. Das Blut kann nur aufgrund einer durch die Reibung des Helms gereizten Augenbrauenw\u00f6lbung flie\u00dfen. In der Gladiatorenschule (in der Turnhalle) haben wir \u00dcbungen nach lateinischen Anweisungen durchgef\u00fchrt. Viele von uns bedauerten, dass wir keine Duelle austragen konnten! Allerdings muss man sagen, dass unsere Holzwaffen Verletzungen verursachen konnten. Der Tag endete mit einem Gladiatorenkampf. Die Erkl\u00e4rungen wurden auf Franz\u00f6sisch und Englisch gegeben.<\/p>\n
