The FACES (Festival of Ancient Culture for European Schools)

The FACES (Festival of Ancient Culture for European Schools) took the form of experimental archaeology workshops with Latin and Greek students from six European schools: Karlsruhe (host school), Luxembourg I, Luxembourg II, Strasbourg, Frankfurt, and Munich.

The trip has been fully funded by the ESK Parents’ Association, to whom we would like to express our sincere thanks.

Three weeks after the FACES, the latin and greek teachers (Mrs Le Gall, Mr Scheer and Mrs Katikaridou) will be able to deliver the pottery and oil lamps to our European partners. All the workshops were held outdoors. The inspectors present: Mr. Jean-Pierre Grosset-Bourbange and Ms. Cécile Merckel were impressed by these cultural outreach activities and will publish an article on the Strasbourg Academy’s website to encourage French Latin teachers to cross the Rhine to conduct this type of experimental archaeology session, which captivated the 150 Latin and Greek scholars gathered for this European Day.

WORKSHOPS:

  1. Moretum (fresh Roman cheese with herbs), bread baking in a Roman clay oven
  2. Pottery (and crafts for younger children)
  3. Museum: Presentation, treasure hunt
  4. Wax tablet
  5. Perfume blending, glass bead bracelets, Roman clothing

« FACES was organised in close collaboration with the Terra Sigillata Museum (Rheinzabern) and its director, Ms Barbara Thomas, who efficiently organised the workshops led by volunteers from the Terra Sigillata Museum Association. »
